As a child of the late 80s, I was obsessed with Mortal Kombat. Part of the reason I’m sure was that my parents wouldn’t let me play it for obvious reasons, but also because of the fatalities (aka the obvious reason my parents wouldn’t let me play it)
The 1995 Mortal Kombat movie was the video game brought to life. Very little story, all within a PG-13 imagined version of Mortal Kombat. While the movie was entertaining, the real selling point here was the soundtrack. Fun fact- the Mortal Kombat soundtrack was the first CD I ever owned, and I’ve listened to the main track at least 40,000 times.
Now with this new movie, and their fancy R rating and modern CGI, and I had incredibly high hopes. While I don’t want to get into spoiler territory, let me just give a few things that are absurd about this movie.
- Goro is now a missing persons in the backyard in suburban Chicago
- Asian Aqua Man?
- Where was the tournament??
- WHERE IS THE THEME SONG???
So should you watch Mortal Kombat? I don’t know. I wouldn’t at all recommend it. It makes zero sense, and lacks a ton of what I loved about the first one. Plus it is one of those movies that is clearly ending on a cliff hanger so they can make 4 more of them, which we need to stop at all costs. This cannot happen.
